The Drama League Directors Project welcomes everyone to apply for its programs. It advances career opportunities and development for directors working in the creative sector and related fields. We believe it is important to offer these opportunities to as wide a range of artists as possible; we encourage all directors, including members of underinvested communities, those who have historically been underrecognized in leadership, and those whose paths to direction may have been nonlinear or nontraditional, to apply. This includes, but is not limited to, Black, Indigenous, Latino/Latina, Asian-American/Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern/North African, South Asian, Southeast Asian, biracial, mixed-race, Global Majority, LGBTQIAA2+, women, non-binary, and disabled directors, as well as directors from rural or non-urban localities. This also includes directors both nationally and internationally. Everyone!

Thank you for your interest in The Drama League Directors Project. We strongly encourage you to read about this year's programs, which feature numerous changes from previous years, before beginning any application by visiting our Artist Opportunities Hub.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Applicants must have a valid passport and, depending upon their nation of origin, coordinate all required visas to travel to the United States and any country the program participates in.
- Applicants are NOT required to have a university degree.
- Applicants are required to have directed a minimum of at least three theatrical productions. This can be work at a theatrical company or institution, a commercial production, community theatre productions, productions at universities/colleges/high schools for which you were paid as a director, or semi-professional productions where you may or may not have received a directors fee. This minimum CANNOT include readings, workshops, private showings, and/or college/university productions directed as part of your student educational training. Applications submitted with less than three eligible theatrical productions will not be considered. Eligibility requirements are explored in depth here.
- Applicants cannot be enrolled in any university undergraduate or graduate degree program during the program's period of activity.
- Applicants must be fully committed to participating in the program dates as their personal priority BEFORE applying. Applicants must be available for all program components during the program period without exception. This means that applicants cannot participate in other career development programs, fellowships, residencies, or other opportunities during this time window. Conflicts with the program components will result in the cancellation of those components, without being rescheduled, and a reduction in the program.
- Additionally, please review each program's schedule to ensure that program components do not conflict with your planned/scheduled directing work. Applicants may only undertake directing commitments during the program period if they do not conflict with the program's specific time requirements, which are outlined on each program page. Conflicts with the program components will result in the cancellation of those components and a reduction in the program, without being rescheduled, and may result in the revocation of the entire program.
ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES: If you are concerned about your eligibility to apply, more information is available at our F.A.Q. page. We understand that every individual comes to directing through their own individual path. If a candidate chooses to apply but is concerned about their credits and their eligibility, it is hoped they will note this in their answers to the application's narrative questions, and address the reasons they've applied anyway.
Thank you for participating! We look forward to learning more about you and your work!
