Therefore, we strongly encourage you to read about this year's details in depth before beginning any application by visiting our Artist Opportunities Hub.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Applicants must have a valid passport and, depending upon their nation of origin, coordinate all required visas to travel to the United States and any country the program participates in.
- Applicants are NOT required to have a university degree.
- Applicants must have directed at least three theatrical productions. This minimum cannot include college or university productions they may have directed as part of their educational training.

Conflicts with the program components will result in the cancellation of those components, without being rescheduled, and a reduction in the program.
- Please review the program schedule to ensure that program components do not conflict with your planned directing work. Applicants may undertake directing commitments during the program period, which do not conflict with the program's time requirements. Conflicts with the program components, however, will result in the cancellation of those components and a reduction in the program, without being rescheduled.
ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES: If you are concerned about your eligibility to apply given the above bullet points, more information is available at our F.A.Q. page. We understand that every individual comes to directing through their own individual path. If a candidate chooses to apply but is concerned about their credits and their eligibility, it is hoped they will note this in their answers to the application's narrative questions, and address the reasons they've applied. However, significant time conflicts in the program period will be difficult to navigate.
Thank you for participating! We look forward to learning more about you and your work!

Thank you for your interest in The Drama League Beatrice Terry Residency. Part of an umbrella of programs collectively known as "The Directors Project," this program is designed for early and mid-career stage directors who identify as writer-directors. The Terry Residency is specifically open to women and nonbinary people; the Residency seeks to make space and resources for these communities, who often encounter sexism, gender bias, misogyny, and other barriers as creators when they choose to both write and direct simultaneously. This residency is named for Drama League alumnus Beatrice Terry, who pioneered her own approach to theatrical creation during her lifetime, as a writer and director of her own work in a male-dominated field.
The Drama League recently altered and expanded its Directors Project programming, and each has its own application and area of focus. We strongly encourage you to read about them in depth before beginning any of the applications by visiting our Artist Opportunities Hub.
